Say hello to my terrifyingly enormous friend

The way I see it, we’re BFFs automatically since I did not dispense with any smashing. Not that I could have with a hand or foot or rolled-up newspaper; this lovely beast is big enough to eat birds! Okay, maybe not. Anyway, it was perched ever so conspicuously next to my water hose all yesterday and then was gone today. SHUDDERBARF.

  1. Nice! Orb weaver? I had a huge one that lived outside my kitchen window at my old apartment. They spin round webs and tend to hang out right in the middle. I named her Grendel, and watched as many a nights she fought her newly-stuck victims. She grew into a behemoth as I lovingly stared at her for months. May your new friendship last even longer!

  2. It’s a writing spider. They’ll usually leave during the day, web and all, and then make it again all over at night. We had one living in our garden for a long time.

  3. I have them show up in my flower beds during the summer. Gives me an excellent excuse to skip the weeding!

  4. It’s a garden spider. I googled. I’m in Cooper-Young too, and I have at least 3 living around my yard. As long as they don’t bother me, I don’t bother them. Plus I think they eat the bad bugs.

  5. A garden spider is a good indication that you have a healthy and balanced garden. They are very valuable. I always name them Charlotte.

  6. Slam and I have one living in the azelea at the front steps. It’s got a huge egg sack all strung up in the web next to it. Freakin’ sweet even if it does give me the heebie jeebies. ugh. My uncle used to have em out in Moscow but they were way bigger, like 3-4 inches across.
