my special stupidity work

I’m new here … and by ‘here’ I mean ‘to Earth’

[Scene: Walking through the courtyard into work, passing someone leaving the building.]

Cheery co-worker: Hi, how are you?
Me, smiling: Good, how are you?
Cheery co-worker: Beautiful day!
Me, smiling: You too!

  1. Heh! Don’t feel bad, that person probably wasn’t listening to you not listening to them.

  2. This happens to me all the time when it comes to fast food speakers and windows or servers in restaurants. “Hi, how are you today?” “Good. Thanks. And you?”

To which…there never comes a reply.

Am I saying it too fast for them to understand? If so wouldn’t they say “I beg your pardon?” Do they not hear me? So…there’s always this…

    …uncomfortable silence.

  3. I haven’t done that, but I have done the cyclical “personal update” convo.

    Me: Hey, how are you?
    Person: Fine, how are you?
Me: I’m fine, how are you?

Thus far, no one has taken it a step further and gone around again … which would make me immediately love them.
