I only screamed once while taking this

And that’s because she spazzed out and made some sick-looking movements, I guess because a grasshopper nearly got caught in the web. Dumbass.

Anyway, this spider has been living just outside my front door, suspended between the coral bells and the lavender mums, for weeks now. I have left her alone. She lives just below my porch light so I imagine she eats pretty well. She has a companion of sorts (a kid?) who appears to be missing some legs. Neither of them seems to enjoy it when I remember to water my plants.

  1. Beyond beautiful.

It looks as though Miss Charlotte now prefers to write in cursive. “Mmmmmmm,” she says.

Perhaps that is her little song to you and Li’l Alien Bunny Boy Mahit Chanakya Spaghetti Fred — a little hum of thanks and welcome.

    “Mmmmmmm.”

(I too leave the gals at the patio door and the back gate alone. We’re all working girls, you know. I salute them as such every morning.)

  2. This is a common garden spider, also called a “writing spider” because of the zig-zagging in the web. They love bumblebees. My grandmother told me that as a child, she and her friends would say “If it writes your name, you’ll die.”

  3. Look at you getting a jump on Halloween decorations! You realize now I can never come to your front door … ever … again. Beautiful but gives me shivers. I would have squeed and run like a big scaredy cat.
