Christmas, baby

The whole having-a-birthday-on-Christmas thing really isn’t that bad on the whole — really! — but the bit that I could truly do without is the mad dash I have to make every year to get ready for Christmas. I spend the two weeks before my birthday and the day of my birthday in this frantic state where I spend all my money and I spend all my time thinking of stuff to buy, stuff to…

This is the only family picture we have

Big ups to the total stranger at the Opryland Hotel who offered to take it for us when he saw me running back and forth from the makeshift, brick-column perch I had made for my camera, which was snapping one picture every 10 seconds while people wandered into the shot without knowing. I hope everyone has had a nice run of the holidays. I know I sure have. I am a lucky, lucky gal. A…

Thanksgiving in black and white

Holden napped through dinner so we got to sit down and have a nice, quiet meal. I got a nice wine buzz, and the food was amazing as usual, since my man can cook like you wouldn’t believe. We had turkey that had been brined, stuffing, sweet potato casserole, green beans, macaroni, cranberry sauce, garlic potatoes. Mmm. I’m lucky. I’m grateful.

My first Mother’s Day

The day itself was forever ago but here in Ihardlypostistan, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to write something about it. I got lots of lovely calls and texts from family and friends, and Samantha was sweet enough to send those beautiful lilies you see up there. They came all closed up but within days were all BAM BAM BAM! with their colors, making Mr. Kitty go insane with plant lust. My boys got me…

Seeing stars

And so begins my attempt to get off my ass, get showered, and go into the world and watch people blow shit up. You’d think that’d be the greatest motivator of all. Alas.

I suck at my birthday

Every year, I’m all, This year I’m going to get people together the week before Christmas for birthday drinks! And every year I do nothing of the sort because Christmas insanity and work obligations settle like lead and by the 23rd I feel like I am underwater, and the time just evaporates. I have never gone out to celebrate my birthday. Ever. In 29 years. It’s weird watching other people do it. It looks like…

Christmas decoration infestation 2010

Oh god, it has begun in earnest. Behold, a tree! It’s a pre-lit model, something I never ever ever thought I’d ever buy, ever. It always just seemed … blasphemous. But Big Lots was out of their unlit trees when I went, so I just went down in size half a foot and opted for the pre-lit, as it fit my budget. And now that I have seen the foolishness of my ways, I dare…

Body politics

I had a bit of a meltdown yesterday right before Thanksgiving dinner. Everything had been going more or less okay; I got up and on the road to the parents’ as early as I could, since my mom had texted me the day before, telling me to hightail it early since I’d be trying to outrun bad weather. I was flying solo, as Ray had to work that afternoon. That sucked, but you gotta do…
