Takes a lot to make me crazy, and a lot is always going on

Looking for a new place to live is one of those things middle-class people get all giddy about. Until they actually have to do it. Then it becomes a chunky slice of purgatory, served up steaming and frustrating.

I will be moving to Birmingham in a month and a half. I’ve found some strong possibilities for my future three-month home, but nothing that looks feasible. Everything is damned expensive. I want very badly to just stay in an extended-stay hotel, but it turns out that they’re way more expensive than I had originally thought. I thought you could get a decent place for $150 a week. Yeah, try $250. There’s no way I can afford nearly $1,000 a month in rent. That would completely eat up the money I’ll be making this summer.

So it looks like I’m going to have to break down and get an apartment. Luckily, there are a whopping three or four places that offer furnished apartments and will actually let you slide with a meager three-month lease. I refuse to move all my crap for three months and then move it back. Phil might not appreciate living in a bare apartment.

This place, University Place, seems to be leading the pack. It’s almost $700 a month, but it’s near the Bham News (it’s technically on the campus of UAB) and utilities are included. What do you think?

See the new colors? Yeah, I’m so bad at HTML that it took me half an hour to figure out how to change the background, the archive background, the links, and the highlight. Pray for me.
