A quick book update

I finished The Time Traveler’s Wife over the weekend while sitting in the M’boro Hastings, which has been completely gutted and renovated since the last time I was in there. What was once green and comfortably worn and dingy is now snazzy and all high-tech and shit, with bright colors and big silver letters hanging from the ceiling. The breezeway is gone and has been replaced by a patio area where you can sit and…

Memphis: Hotbed of Political Corruption … Part Infinity

It was a busy night in the newsroom. Lots of interesting stuff happening in and around town. I’ll get to that stuff in another post. This post I’m devoting solely to the deliciously naughty election-scandal-in-the-making that broke late last night. The Flyer has this to say: In an astounding development, the Flyer has learned, ballot materials, including a ballot box to be used for “off-machine” purposes (certain write-in ballots and provisional ballots) and other election-day…

Let the bash begin

Serrabee has upped the ante and is throwing two blogger bashes next week to maximize attendance. Veeeerrrry clev-ah! The first is Thursday, Aug. 10, and the second is Sunday, Aug. 13. Both start at 7 at the Deli. Kudos to Mr. Mike for the banner. I’m looking forward to meeting some fellow pale, pajama-wearing, bloviatin’, bloggin’ fools.

One way to perplex your host

My most popular post ev-ah is this one, in which I designate four particularly offensive emo-indie-kid hairstyles I’d like to see instantly halted. I wrote this post last Novemeber, and lately I’ve gotten at least 20 Google referrals each day to it. I don’t know what kids out there are searching for (I’m the top result for “indie hairstyles” and “asymmetrical hairstyles” if you do an image search, and I’m near the top if you…

Open letter to my feet

Y’all, I am so sorry for this weekend. I was mean to you and I had no right to be. Blame the patriarchy. And my occational compliance with its demands. Okay, just blame me. I gave in and I knew better. See, sometimes you have to get prettied up and flip-flops or magenta sneakers just won’t do. I have a pair of sensible orthopedic flat mules in my closet that are comfortable despite the fact…

Let’s make a movie

So I’m reading The Time Traveler’s Wife and it’s fantastic. Tamara raved about it and lent it to me while I was in Nashville. And I’m so glad she did, because I’ve almost bought it countless times in the bookstore but for some reason never did. It’s beautifully written, painstakingly detailed and plotted, poignant, whimsical, the whole bit. Love it. It’s nearly three inches thick (hardcover, at least) and I’m probably fifty pages from the…

Cancer

Sunday, July 23: Gonzo, charging the paparazzi. Gonzo’s getting worse, I think. His belly feels so distended, like any pressure I put on it when I hold him just squashes his insides. There are lumps in there, too. I’m unclear as to whether the lumps are organs, or the cancer, or organs swollen from the cancer. I don’t know how it works and it wouldn’t make a difference even if I did. It’s been three…

Boobs

The breastfeeding wars rage on. The latest battle is over a recent cover of BabyTalk Magazine, a magazine that presumably talks a lot about babies and things babies are into, like being fed and stuff. It seems some readers of this magazine — parents, presumably — got a little hot and bothered by this: And BabyTalk received a heap of letters from disgruntled readers: “I was SHOCKED to see a giant breast on the cover…
