Day 204 — Studio on the Square

[for Monday, Sept. 23]

studio on the square — July 23

I met up with Brandon to see Eagle Vs. Shark, which ended up being sillier and funnier than I had imagined it would be. I’d read a lot of reviews accusing it of ripping of the whole Napoleon Dynamite slow-losers-who-say-stupid-things aesthetic, but I didn’t see too much in the film that resembled ND. I just saw some deliciously ridiculous absurdist dialogue and some scrumptiously pillowy Jemaine Clement lips.

I dunno. It’s one of those movies that you don’t necessarily need to see in the theater. Its quirky charms will translate nicely into other formats. Still, I appreciate seeing the very odd art direction of this film on the big screen. It’s just plain silly and a little bit sweet. A lot stupid, though. But I suspect everyone acts stupid when they’re as in love as Lily is.

There’s a lot to be said here about this generation’s extending of adolescence well into legit adulthood, but I’m tired and not really up for pontificating about that at the moment. Suffice it to say that 25 is the new 18, etc. At least when it comes to popular entertainment. In real life, though, I don’t know many 25-year-old who don’t work their asses off to pay their own bills.
