I just finished watching the series finale of Six Feet Under. Jesus. How does HBO do it? So many good shows. So much good writing. I mean, I’d read the recap at TWOP long ago, when it first aired. And I’d seen a YouTube clip of the closing sequence. So I knew what was coming. But, man, that show can make me blubber like a fucking infant. It’s ridiculous. The whole idea of moving away from the family — impossibly far away — chokes me up because it’s something I wrestle with every day. How much distance can we tolerate? We are adaptable people, but our souls sour.
Anyway, what a great show.
That final sequence, with its breathy companion song sung by Sia Furler, got me to thinkin’ about how much I sure would like Regina Spektor’s new album for Christmas. Elves, are you listening? And while you’re at it, could you get me some new wine glasses? I broke yet another one today, which means I’m down to two. Which just won’t do.
I get to go get my car tomorrow, so I’m super excited about that. I suppose once I sit down in it, a whirlwind of last-minute Christmas preparation will begin. I’ve got to finish up my shopping, of course. But I’m also thinking I should get to the grocery store to prepare a weekend survival kit for when I go to my parents’. See, these past couple of months I’ve overhauled my food intake — to surprisingly positive results — and if I’m going to be hanging at the ‘rents’ for three days, I’m going to need some wheat bread and Kashi granola bars, you know? And a fruit platter. Mmmm, fruit platter. Otherwise it’s all meat and beans and banana pudding. And that doesn’t even sit well mentally.
I’m looking forward to the holiday. I can’t wait to see what Phil got me (he always gets the best presents) and I can’t wait to unload all this swag onto its rightful owners. It’s bizarre that Christmas is here already, and that 2007 will be lumbering up and plopping down in my lap in a couple of weeks.
But that’s how it goes. You think I’d be used to it by now.
I watched the finale three different times and blubbered three different times. What a great ending. I loved seeing how everyone died.
Don’t go buying anything for yourself before Xmas, LT. You never know what is already wrapped up for you.
Good luck with the last-minute shopping and food prep. Lean Cuisine Spa Cuisine makes some delicious microwavable meals with no preservatives.
i hate to be a contrarian but i really thought six feet under went downhill fast after the first season. it just got ridiculously melodramatic and contrived – i am allergic to melodrama! but that doesn’t mean i didn’t cry like an idiot at the last two episodes – i still did, cause even when i know i’m being manipulated, it still works. (and i did think the very last episode was well done. but the intervening 3 seasons – yuck! which begs the question of why i kept watching, for which i have no response…)
that said the wire is the BEST show on television. probably ever.
TB, even if I wanted to, I am now officially broke and can’t buy myself anything before xmas. Excepting groceries. I’ll check into those Spa Cuisines.
Sharon, I agree that the first season was the best of the series. The show is pathetically melodramatic — those characters are so ridiculously and needlessly fucked up. But there’s just something about the show’s aesthetic that hooks me. Plus I like watching the actors. They are all so frigging good.
I’ve never seen the Wire. I’ll add it to my queue.
Well, my little hint concerning your gifts is pretty embarrassing now that I’ve read some of the loot you’ve already acquired. What’s wrapped under your tree seems paltry in comparison. But I tried, dammit! I’m officially broke, too, which is why I couldn’t spoil you like an old dear friend should be spoiled.
No way, dude! I can’t wait to open your gifts, which have been taunting me since you left. I swear every time I pass by that bag, it gets a little bigger.
So I can open these Christmas Eve, right?
I feel like a schlep for having nothing for you while you were here. Nothing!!
Also, hint?!?! Hmmm…
The pw is cowijpuy. (That’s the sound of me pooh-poohing your concerns.)
Yup, Christmas Eve is long enough to make you wait. Teee! I can hardly wait to see if you like them.
