It just burns.

I’ve been reading up on peptic and duodenal ulcers, and by golly I think I may have one of those damn things, probably duodenal. Either that or acid reflux disease. Because for several months now I’ve had chronic chest pain and burning. Mostly burning. Every day. Several times a day.

Could it be? Could my lower esophageal sphincter be defective? Dear lord, they don’t prepare you for this crap in college.

I know they say that ulcers and such aren’t caused by stress, but I’ve had a fairly stressful summer and I remember realizing after a particularly stressful day that my chest had been burning all day and I’d eaten a whole roll of Rolaids to try to stifle the pain. If what I’ve got isn’t caused by stress, it’s surely aggravated by it. My crappy eating habits probably don’t help either.

Either way, I probably should go to the doctor.

I’m just not prepared for any of this body-breaking bullshit that comes along with getting older. Making regular doctor’s visits is not something I’m going to be able to adjust to easily. I’ve made my peace with the dentist and the eye doctor, but the others? The specialists? I mean, I thank the heavens that they exist, but I’m not all that giddy about actually having to request their services.

It’s just another way for this fast-moving train to remind me that I can’t get off and I can’t slow down so I’d better pay attention and pay my fare and enjoy the ride as much as possible.

Actually, it burns for no one in particular.
