Where the dead trees go to rest.
Tonight some co-workers regaled me with tales of some of the crazier CA shenanigans over the years. Tales of open gunfire out front on Union Avenue translating into people inside (there are huge glass windows fronting our building) hitting the deck and hiding under their desks. Tales of a crazy man who lived on the fifth floor without anyone noticing for … weeks? Tales of another crazy man who slipped inside the building, supposedly armed, and — after running crazed through the lobby — wormed his way into the drop-tile ceiling to hide.
It’s crazy out there, but, y’all, it’s crazy up in the newsroom too.
Don’t forget the time, in maybe 2004, when one of the security guards, a woman, stabbed another woman in the parking lot with a pair of scissors, then disappeared. Ah, good times.
Oh my god, I miss ALL the good shit.
Apparently before I started at my current gig, a guy in the pressroom cut off his own head with a chainsaw at the daily.
OMG! No one will talk about it.
I think the pressroom is haunted, of course.
WHAT?! That is INSANE! And yes of course the pressroom is haunted!!!
I think ‘coma wins the Internet for that one.
We never had anything choice like y’all’s tales; we just had to deal with winos cussing us in multiple languages as we walked to, from and around the building. (Another reason why Nashville should not be English-only: how will all our children know how to answer people who insult them in another language? The reaction on a vulgar bully’s face when you cuss him back in his native tongue is priceless.)
I love the photo, BTW. Makes me more than slightly homesick. I’ll always be an ink-stained wretch; I know we’re all technowhizzes on 24-hour cycles now, but there’s just not the same satisfaction in hitting a button called “publish” that there was watching those presses roll. (I should post a photo from our final press run, but I would out myself even more than usual if I did. Hee.)
G, lol @ the English-only bit. And I’m dying to see that photo you mention. You should e-mail it to me!
