Got to get up early and do an interview at 9 a.m. This is bad enough, but I’m feeling particularly sickly — aching head, sore throat, lethargic limbs — and would like to take some Nyquil. But if I do that, I won’t get up until 2. I watched American Wedding tonight. What a terrible, terrible film. How does an “actor” read that script and think, “Dude, I have got to be a part of…

Don’t you get sick of it, stuck in the thick of it, making new friends you don’t need?

Doug Martsch has returned to my titles. New photos are up under the Near and Dear section. They’re from Christmas. I’ll continue to update those when I can. This week is all about work. Ick. I’m working on two news stories and I’ve got to talk to the assistant managing editor at the Birmingham News. They’ve talked to all my refs and they still like me, so things might be looking up after all.

I don’t like this air, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop breathing it

I’m winding down. Phil is already dozing in the bedroom. Gonzo is watching me type this. The air conditioner is making up for the sticky spring weather that keeps seeping in under the doors. I have completely enjoyed my time off. And it’s even better that I don’t have to go to school tomorrow. All this time at home as allowed me to bond with the ferrets. Seriously! They’re used to being alone for a…

Friday Five

I almost forgot. Ladies and gentlemen, the Friday Five: What one thing are you most looking forward to . . . 1. …today? Relaxing until I’m bored to tears. 2. …over the next week? Getting some work done for the back-to-school issue so this nagging feeling of non-productivity will go away. 3. …this year? Graduating from college in December. 4. …over the next five years? Oooh, starting a career and settling down in a house…

The weather, my friends, is sick. It’s January 3rd and it’s 65 degrees outside. It feels like it’s May or something. The plant on my balcony isn’t dying. We actually turned the air conditioner on last night when it got too balmy in the apartment. January. AC. ??? I’m beginning to accept Phil’s assessment of this as the End Times. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not going to drape placards around my neck and…

We are accidents waiting to happen

Happy new year. I won’t go on that typical diatribe about how time is just a construct and years don’t actually exist on their own. But as long as it’s an excuse to get smashed and party all night, I guess that’s good enough. I have a whole extra week before I have to place my little pug nose on that large, creaking grindstone again. I’m talking about school, kids. And work at the paper…

Saw LOTR with my dad today. He is one of those people who can’t help but narrate the film to themselves aloud. Hee. But we had a good time and we both really liked it. I got shot down for the Minneapolis Star Tribune internship. Ouch. I wanted that one. Well, I want one period. But Birmingham is looking quite possible, even though that was the one I wanted least. Is this irony, or karma?…

Christmas

Oh. My. God. I am exhausted. The women of my family are seated in the den, watching some redneck comedians on Comedy Central. The men of my family are sprawled out in my parents’ bedroom, watching the exact same thing. I didn’t realize that gender apartheid happened in my family. Every now and then I hear enormous guffaws waft down the stairwell. What’s annoying is that I can hear the joke in the next room,…

holidays people are strange

Days like today remind me why it’s so hard for me to leave the house sometimes. I had to make rounds and pick up gifts for Phil’s mom, sister and brother, which landed my in Pier One, Hobby Lobby and Target. Good lord. Scores of shoppers with that glazed look of disbelief and confusion everywhere. Cars aggressively vying for parking spots. Annoying children putting their grimy hands on everything they can possibly reach. Oddly enough,…

No one makes friends with a failure

Phil and I are terrible at keeping our xmas gifts secret from one another, so last night, when I was feeling down because I strained a muscle in my back or something, he decided a gift would make everything better. So he gave me the Strangers With Candy DVD box set! It rocks! That’s one of the most under-appreciated shows of our time. Kudos to Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello for their great writing. It’s…
