Day 248 — ‘The Game’

[for Wednesday, Sept. 5] Not unlike The Rules, which I love for its sheer ridiculousness and tendency toward parody, this book is all about manipulation and tricksterism. (“It’s not lying; it’s flirting.”) The former promises marriage; the latter promises booty. Both no doubt lead their followers down the path to become horrible people. Which means they are excellent reads. Project 365

Day 245 — Picture of a Picture

[for Sunday, Sept. 2] Ashley, JD, Courtney and I braved the crowd (seriously, they were down to just Bluff tickets by the time we got there, so we had to get some scalped seats) for the penultimate Redbirds game of the season. The game itself was, as most baseball games go, fairly uneventful, but fun (we lost to Nashville 5-4, I think). But the real treat was the fireworks show afterward. Man, I love me…

Day 244 — Cox

[for Saturday, Sept. 1] Coxynoodlenose (okay, where did that nickname come from?) came back to the ‘Boro for some face time over the weekend. We whooped it up at the Campus Pub, which is a seedy little joint on Greenland that offers dollar beers and a foosball table lit by a billiard lamp shaped like a NASCAR car. I don’t remember too much, except for being my usual obnoxious drunk self, and finding someone’s phone…

Day 243 — Changing

I stepped outside today and was hit with a lack of heat. If that’s possible. This month — the hottest on record for Memphis* — has just been day after day of punishing heat. I’ve avoided going outside except to walk to and from my car and to and from various doors. The humidity has been like a warm, wet washcloth atop my lungs. The sun has been white-hot, baking every surface it touches. And…

Day 241 — I Heart Saltillo

[for Wednesday, Aug. 29] Sunday was not only my brother’s birthday, but it was also the first of the upcoming Sunday family dinners my mom, aunt, and grandmother have decided to resurrect. When I was a kid, we used to go to Granny’s on Sundays to eat dinner with the family. The tradition probably got neglected around the time that my great-grandfather and grandfather got so sick and were in and out of the hospital.…

Day 239 — Butterfly

My mom can make things grow even when there’s no rain. (Argh! I think when I get home I’m going to crop out the pink stuff at left. It’s bugging me.) Project 365

Day 238 — Birthday Boy

[for Sunday, Aug. 26] My little brother turned 20 yesterday — 20! — and I am kind of freaking out over how much he has changed in the past five years. Last night I dug through a bottomless box of old photos in my parents’ living room, and came across picture after picture of him making the sweetest/silliest/goofiest faces, from his time spent as a little toddler cutie-pie to his pudgy, awkward adolescent period to…
