Day 237 — The New Mezcal

My favorite Mexican place opened up a new location on Union recently. I’ve eaten there twice now, and I have some thoughts. Of course it’s nice not to have to hoof it out to Perkins Etd. for my enchilada fix, so there’s that. Overall, my usual (the very unadventurous Lunch No. 7) isn’t quite as top-notch as it is at Perkins Etd. The sauce on the enchilada is darker and less sweet, but the chicken…

Day 234 — Tom Lee

He couldn’t swim, but in 1925, he saved thirty-two people from drowning in the muddy Mississippi when a steamer sank. For some reason this isn’t on Wikipedia. Project 365

Day 232 — Anderton’s East

Anderton’s used to be a Memphis institution, from what I’ve been told, but it closed down a year or two ago. I never got to eat there, sadly. A man stopped me as I was taking photos today and wanted to be sure I took notice of the sign that proclaimed this particular location Anderton’s East. He explained that it was built as the eastern counterpart to the downtown Anderton’s. He described a typical day…

Day 231 — Rebecca

[for Sunday, Aug. 19] The blur is totally intentional. Really. It’s art. Okay, not really. That up there is Rebecca, preparing her backhand to give me a quick smack across the cheek for taking her picture. It’s okay, folks, I survived. Wish her and her two Bahamaritas a happy birthday and pray that she doesn’t strangle me for putting her picture on the internet. Earlier in the evening we (along with Ashley and JD) saw…

Day 230 — Sir Howard the Lounger

[for Saturday, Aug. 18] Lots of good chances to take photos today, but, alas, I forgot my camera and had to snap a pic with the crapphone while catsitting. Project 365

Day 229 — Haircut

It’s too freaking hot for long hair. So I got about five inches taken off, and I told the stylist to do whatever he wanted with the top. So he gave me some bangs — “fake bangs” to be exact — that I can sort of sweep out of the way or pull down in front depending on my mood. I haven’t had real bangs since middle school. I’ll do my best this time around…

Day 228 — Vigil

Somehow I managed to sucker Courtney, Rebecca, Shane, and Phil into piling into my crapmobile and accompanying me to Dead Elvis Night at Graceland. Today marks 30 years that the King has been gone, and the fans and mourners were out in droves to mark the occasion. The place was packed. I had kind of half-planned to get a candle and walk up the driveway to the grave to pay my respects (which took an…
