Trouble turns ten

[photo by my mom, who remarked, in an e-mail to me: “Now, isn’t this just trouble waiting to happen…!”] This is my youngest nephew, Patrick. Today is his tenth birthday. It’s hard to believe he’s hitting double digits. I remember exactly what I was wearing the day he was born. I was a freshman in high school and, naturally, obsessed with clothes. Strangely enough for someone obsessed with clothing, I was wearing a long-sleeved, tight-fitting,…

Things I said I’d write about but haven’t yet

It’s like make-up work, in blog form. • I hadn’t seen Jimmy or Theresa in several months. In fact, I think the last time might have been last spring or summer. Anyway, it had been too long. Theresa and I hung out in the kitchen for way too long and girl talked. We watched old videos of the guys answering random questions posed by their friends. Saw LOTR with my dad today. He is one of those people who can’t help but narrate the film to themselves aloud. Hee. But we had a good time and we both really liked it. I got shot down for the Minneapolis Star Tribune internship. Ouch. I wanted that one. Well, I want one period. But Birmingham is looking quite possible, even though that was the one I wanted least. Is this irony, or karma?…

Christmas

Oh. My. God. I am exhausted. The women of my family are seated in the den, watching some redneck comedians on Comedy Central. The men of my family are sprawled out in my parents’ bedroom, watching the exact same thing. I didn’t realize that gender apartheid happened in my family. Every now and then I hear enormous guffaws waft down the stairwell. What’s annoying is that I can hear the joke in the next room,…
