Don’t you get sick of it, stuck in the thick of it, making new friends you don’t need?

Doug Martsch has returned to my titles. New photos are up under the Near and Dear section. They’re from Christmas. I’ll continue to update those when I can. This week is all about work. Ick. I’m working on two news stories and I’ve got to talk to the assistant managing editor at the Birmingham News. They’ve talked to all my refs and they still like me, so things might be looking up after all.

I don’t like this air, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop breathing it

I’m winding down. Phil is already dozing in the bedroom. Gonzo is watching me type this. The air conditioner is making up for the sticky spring weather that keeps seeping in under the doors. I have completely enjoyed my time off. And it’s even better that I don’t have to go to school tomorrow. All this time at home as allowed me to bond with the ferrets. Seriously! They’re used to being alone for a…

Friday Five

I almost forgot. Ladies and gentlemen, the Friday Five: What one thing are you most looking forward to . . . 1. …today? Relaxing until I’m bored to tears. 2. …over the next week? Getting some work done for the back-to-school issue so this nagging feeling of non-productivity will go away. 3. …this year? Graduating from college in December. 4. …over the next five years? Oooh, starting a career and settling down in a house…

no title

Saw LOTR with my dad today. He is one of those people who can’t help but narrate the film to themselves aloud. Hee. But we had a good time and we both really liked it. I got shot down for the Minneapolis Star Tribune internship. Ouch. I wanted that one. Well, I want one period. But Birmingham is looking quite possible, even though that was the one I wanted least. Is this irony, or karma?…

The symptoms of our getting older: the problems we say we don’t mind. Most of us never get over memories mingled with lies

You know, I really should be giving credit to those from whom I lift my title sentences. These past few times it’s been Built to Spill — a huge surprise, I’m sure. There’s just so many little nuggets of wisdom sprinkled in their lyrics that I can’t ignore. I want to share. It’s Christmastime, dammit! Speaking of Christmastime, there’s a Bing Crosby (I think) xmas album playing the the background at work, which is nice.…

No one wants to hear what you dreamt about unless you dreamt about them

I am suddenly outraged at my complacence and frightened for the future of our society and world. I have been reading Culture Jam, by Kalle Lasn (editor of Adbusters Magazine). Nick loaned it to Phil and I stole it last night and read the first few chapters — enough to realize that these nagging feelings I’ve had lately about culture, society, assimilation and happiness aren’t just the unsettling parts of maturing and growing up. I…

A fraction of the sum, the middle and the front

God, what an amazing day. The weather is crunk, I tell you. And I only had to work three hours today. I think I’ll head out to Hobby Lobby in about half an hour and put together an art kit for my nephew, Casey, and maybe buy some pastel paper I’ve been needing. I promised Phil I’d clean up the place so we wouldn’t have to wallow in our own filth all weekend. And then…

In a city of the future, it is difficult to concentrate

Oooh, when I got in to work today there was a festive basket sitting on my desk full of a ton of junk food and pretzels and holiday fun stuff. Hooray for Christmas and its ability to make compulsive gift-givers out of everyone, including me! Phil and I went shopping yesterday to check some things off our list. I didn’t do as well as I had hoped, but I got some things out of the…
