Single-arity

I’ve got a post up at iDiva about the frustrations of trying to meet men to date in a city where there are 20,000 or so more single women than men. (Check out that map. Hello, west coast!) It already seems like an uphill battle when you work an odd schedule that takes away most of your nights and weekends, and if you mix in your own anti-outgoing personality and weirdness about meeting new people,…

Day 174 — Welcome to Stepford

[For June 23] Made my first trek down to Harbor Town today. What an odd place that is. Colorful high-dollar houses crammed together on a tiny sandbar. Just seems weird, and a little precarious, living so low and close to the water. And in the distance you can see the city, marked by the tip of the Pyramid. So close, and yet so far. Project 365

CultureGrits has launched

I love it when people take a creative idea and run with it. Which is why I am smitten with CultureGrits, the new online Memphis culture and arts zine. If you’ve got a slice of Memphis to share, e-mail Mz. Mary K and let her know!

Anyone know what “night nuit nox” means? Update: Palm Tree and La tell me…

A little Tuesday-afternoon Memphis typography nerdery

Today I took to Madison avenue to get my daily picture, since I had passed by the Camp Electric Company’s building a hundred times but had never had time to stop and capture their rather rusty and Spartan sign. Nestled just next door to Camp is Sam Phillips Recording, a legendary entity in music if ever there was one. Here’s the sign on the side of the building that faces Madison: It’s a nifty sign,…

Day 145 — Memphis Zombie Massacre

[for May 25] Kids, I’m pooped. The zombie walk went absolutely fabulously. There were waaaay more people who turned out than we ever expected. And they all looked FANTASTIC. I absolutely cannot express how happy I am with the way this turned out. It is a completely amazing feeling to be a part of something that so many people get into so intensely. It is hard to describe what it feels like to help create…
