Friday flower No. 6

purple columbine

This here is a purple columbine, which only bloomed because I never got around to gutting the pot it’s in, as I originally thought those clover-lookin’ leaves were weeds of some sort. Turns out they were going to produce a flower whose unopened blossom looks not unlike an honest-to-god dragon head.

  1. Your columbine’s name is Winky Purple and the curls on the backside of the flower are called spurs. I have that one. Let it go to seed and then scatter them around for more. There is a Rose and Yellow shade also available in the Winky series.

  2. I planted one of those last year and it just popped up this spring really quickly and is looking fantastic.

  3. @saraclark @Kristin I’m not sure how I didn’t hear the word “columbine” for a flower until this year, but there ya go. They are so neat looking! Kristin, I can’t wait to see yours when I come to town. SC, I am going to hunt for those other shades. This flower has really grown on me this year.
