‘Like slingshotting a spaceship around the moon’

Bowl-o-rama from Lindsey Turner on Vimeo. So rumor has it that Imperial is closing by the end of the year, but I can’t find this information anywhere on the internets. (I can find plenty about the 2006 rumor.) Can someone substantiate this? I need to know for sure whether or not to be sad for serious. Instant update-o-rama: Kip’s got a photo gallery up!

Memphis people are strange

Manners matter

Last night I was in line at Kimbrough, bottle of cheap bubbly in hand, waiting on the guy in front of me to get done with his transaction, when said dude turned to me and asked what I was getting. I held up the bottle so he could see the label. “Is it good?” he asked. I nodded in the affirmative. “It’s good and cheap,” I said. (Barefoot Bubbly, woo!) “Yeah, I need something to…

Surreal, day two

My friend Coco provides some narration for the scene out in front of our office at roughly 3 p.m. Thursday (day two of Mission: Everyone Suddenly Wants Newspapers): ‘Milk it while we got it’ from Lindsey Turner on Vimeo. Last night the TV news (I forget which station) broadcast live out front at 10, and the story was about how the paper was the hottest-selling item in town. So, so weird.

Speaking Southern like it should be spoke

When I was growing up, there was this book floating around our house called Speaking Southern Like It Should Be Spoke, and it was more or less a dictionary of Southernisms. What I can’t say for sure is whether or not it was mean or nice. Like, was it playful self-parody, or mean razzing from the outside? I’m not sure, and it’s even harder to tell since I can’t really find much out about that…

I'm posting about my damn cats again Memphis videos

City sounds

This is what I heard just a couple of hours ago out behind my apartment. What’s up for interpretation is whether or not these cat noises are aggressive … or amorous. What’s not up for interpretation is that I have GOT to get a better video camera that doesn’t allow for that constant random vibrating background noise. And also? That my cats totally want in on that feral feline action. The sweet sound of urban…

‘The blues at gunpoint’

Last night as I was leaving work I saw two rockabilly dudes with tight jeans and plaid shirts and slick black hair peering into the windows of Sun Studio, taking pictures through the glass because the place was closed. It made me smile. I get a kick out of living in a place that’s a mecca for a lot of people searching for some cultural roots. My co-worker David wrote this this morning and it’s…

Imperial Lanes

Y’all know there’s a 24-hour bowling alley in town, right? Just checking. Because this is what it looks like at 1 a.m. on a Sunday. Empty. I dunno. Just seems a little weird is all. Maybe it’s the lack of a bar. But enterprising folks could just sit out in the car and pass a bottle of champagne around before going inside, were the lack of a bar to seem intimidating. Just saying. Or maybe…

Monday-afternoon abortion musing

Lately there have been people at the corner of Union and … Claybrook? I can’t remember … around the clock, holding anti-abortion signs. (The only one I recall being able to read said, “Pray to End Abortion.”) I’ve seen an eclectic group of folks holding those signs. Saturday at nearly midnight, I saw a group of young white men in collared shirts holding the signs. My blood pressure, predictably, spiked. Abortion’s been on my mind…
