Day 290 — The Set

[for Wednesday, Oct. 17] (click photo for notes) They’re filming a movie at my place of employ. The whole process is mostly interesting, with just a smidge of annoying crap thrown in. Annoying: There are lots of tattooed, unwashed dudes walking around with ladders and boxes, installing lights and blinds and green film over the windows. The newsroom is now so bright that we all feel like we’re working under spotlights. The green film on…

More fun with pop-culture punctuation!!!!!!!

Not too long ago I petitioned Fergie, the Duchess of Skank, to reconsider her careless usage of pronouns in “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” the official radio song of Summer 2007. Sadly, she has not responded to my letter, so I am forced to move on to even more trivial matters: Good Luck Chuck. While I have tried my best to ignore Dane Cook for the past two years so as to not sully my irrational…

Day 210 — Balls

[for Sunday, July 29] Kristin and Lonnie are in town for a few days to visit and go see the White Stripes tomorrow. Yesterday, we went to see the Simpsons movie (my verdict: Meh; too much Homer, not enough of the other characters, etc., but the animation was lovely on the IMAX screen) and then, afterward, when we realized Rendezvous was closed and when the Flying Fish was packed, we ducked into Automatic Slim’s for…

Day 204 — Studio on the Square

[for Monday, Sept. 23] I met up with Brandon to see Eagle Vs. Shark, which ended up being sillier and funnier than I had imagined it would be. I’d read a lot of reviews accusing it of ripping of the whole Napoleon Dynamite slow-losers-who-say-stupid-things aesthetic, but I didn’t see too much in the film that resembled ND. I just saw some deliciously ridiculous absurdist dialogue and some scrumptiously pillowy Jemaine Clement lips. I dunno. It’s…

Movies I actually liked

Ratatouille — No shocker there. I’m a Brad Bird nerd (I love The Iron Giant) and every day I wish I worked for Pixar. Ratatouille isn’t a kid’s movie, really (I dragged my nephews to it, along with my mom, sister, and grandmother), but it’s got enough neat stuff to look and laugh at to keep kids entertained. It’s really meant for an older, artier crowd, one that includes foodies and cork dorks. I love…

1408 (obligatory spoiler alert … sorta)

Phil and I went to see 1408 the other night. It was a decent-enough flick, carried pretty much by John Cusack and his sheer will to get to the end credits. It’s based on a Stephen King short story that I’ve never read, but like some of King’s other works, it’s about a writer and a place with a bad reputation and some spiritual residue, and how those environments can bring out the worst in…

Foreign film log

Lately, because of my lazy Netflix technique (adding a whole bunch of films from one genre at once), I’ve been watching a lot of foreign films. I wasn’t too crazy about On The Edge, and it may have finally cemented my creeping apathy toward Irish filmmaking in general. I really liked Fat Girl for its deeply complicated nature (I wish I’d found this film while still in college because I would have milked it for…
