The Brothers Avett

My dear Avetts

Time got away from me but I really can’t let the slow, steady march of minutes be my excuse for not saying anything about the Avett Brothers show I saw Sept. 24 at Minglewood Hall. I’ve been turned on to the Avett Brothers for a little more than a year now thanks to AY-D, who is pretty much their biggest fan ever. Their songs are so bittersweet and so lovely and have largely been the soundtrack to my life this past year. The show they put on was amazing. They are fantastic musicians and hot as fucking Hades, an added bonus for those of us with functioning eyeballs. I’m so happy that the Memphis crowd — even though it was a little on the Greeky side, if you know what I mean, and I bet you do — was into it. Nothing worse than a crowd of stone-faced, unimpressed hipsters. No, this crowd sang along to songs that hadn’t even been released yet. It was fantastic.

I didn’t get any video but here’s a taste of the awesome from a couple of years back:

A sweet bonus was the opening act, Samantha Crain, who looks a little like America Ferrera and was just sweet as could be (she worked her own merch table!). I bought her latest album from her and I am digging it. It is so awesome to me to see a woman of substance — not some waify hipster chick who’s all knobby knees and sternum and wailing — up there rocking out on a guitar and singing her heart out. Fuck yes.

A little taste of Samantha:
