Ghost cat

Those of you with small pets or even tiny mobile children know what it’s like to be lying in bed and feel the familiar shift of the mattress and the soft, uneven plod of four limbs as they amble slowly and unsurely toward you. Right? Pretty standard stuff.

I was lying in bed, on my stomach, this morning, just enjoying being prone in the sunshine, when I felt the mattress jar and those footsteps come toward me, depressing the mattress around my legs in a little four-footed pattern. And I briefly thought, Awwwww, kitty. And then I thought, WHAT THE SHIT? because my doors were closed and my cats were not in my bedroom. And I turned my head to see … nothing. Nothing but my legs.

Yep.

  1. That happens to me a lot, usually right when falling asleep or right when waking up. Better than feeling monsters on the bed, I guess.

  2. Similar thing happened to me. I was training my dog to stay off the bed (which was really a mattress/box springs on the floor). In the middle of the night, I felt the dog climb on the bed and lay across my legs. The dog weighed about 50 pounds, so it was quite noticable. I told the dog to get off the bed. Several times. I finally kicked the crap out of it. When I did, the dog raised her head. She had been asleep on her blanket on the floor next to my head. Turned on the light, nothing in the room. Is this some syndrome?

  3. maybe this is like phantom phone calls, when you hear your phone ringing but no one is calling or you feel your purse vibrating but no one has called… in 2003 i went to central america and left all technology behind. it took me about two weeks to quit hearing phantom phone rings.

  4. That happens to me on the bed also. Sometimes in other rooms I’ll occasionally see them – low to the ground, just at the edge of sight, always darting away. Glad to know phantom cats are at other people’s houses as well.

  5. I have felt phantom cats for so many years that I long ago came to welcome the occasional visits they reward me with. A recent experience allowed me to actually reach to pet the animal, and was able to not only tactily feel the cat, but using one hand, was able to lift it from my legs, feeling the familiar weight of a young animal. As I continued to lift it towards me, knowing no real cat was in the house, I turned my head slightly, and became aware of a shadowy figure (the size of a cat maybe 6 months of age) cradeled in my hand. I felt quite flattered to be allowed the connection, and somewhat soothed to think I was regarded as “safe”. I don’t know what the explanition is, para-normal, or some psychotic episode similar to hearing voices, which science tries to explain as a cross-wiring of certain senses. Still an interesting occurance, either way.
