My youth, topographically speaking

So Randal has a post up about memory-mapping, which is a concept I just love because I am constantly trying to grab onto ways to bank my memories before my brain kicks them out or muddies them too much, so and I have jumped on board with all my baggage and made my own memory map. It’s just such a lovely little concept, I think, to find yourself combing over topography and allowing specific memories to bubble up and implant themselves again in your immediate consciousness as you see specific locations. It’s been cathartic for me to remember the hilarity and the drama and the ridiculousness inherent in my adolescence and teenagerdom. In many ways, I had a lot more figured out then than I do now. But that’s ridiculous, of course. (Even if it’s not.)

So here’s my map-in-progress.

I’ve got plenty more ridiculous things to add to it as I think of them. And I really hope all you vagrants create your own, because I’d love to see them and get a better understanding of where you came from.

4.30.09 12:57 p.m. update: I’ve added some things and clarified some things. Turns out you make trifling mistakes when you undertake such projects while fueled by an entire bottle of zinfandel.

  1. There are so many stories that don’t get to be told because we’re off creating new ones (not that creating new stories is a bad thing at all). It’s nice to be able to share a little bit of the history that makes us who we are.

Sure, like everything else we put online, it’s through our personal filters of “I’ll leave out the boring stuff” and “I’ll tell only SO MUCH personally embarrassing detail,” but getting to know the childhood Lindsey (much like getting to know the mostly grown-up Lindsey) is a delight.

    Also, bindle.

  2. Thank you so much for sharing this. I can’t explain how happy I am that this technology exists. I just read through your entire map (hope nobody from work is reading!) and can’t wait to get started on my own. I have a feeling it’s going to take a long, long time.

I haven’t been excited about a project like this in years, though.

  3. Can’t wait until you start adding all the Nashville and Murfreesboro stories. Good times.
