holden parenthood

First bath!

I finally relented on giving the boy a rubdown once the sweet newborn smell of his head gave way to the mundane smell of sweaty hair. I propped up the baby book and made sure we did things as Dr. Sears said to do them. I know, I know. This is also how I cook, even when I’m cooking Hamburger Helper. I’m neurotic. Holden was not too keen on the experience, but he smells a…

I can’t stop smelling his head

He’s here and he’s wonderful. Holden Turner Karpovage arrived Saturday, Nov. 5, at 8:34 a.m., at home in a tiny inflatable pool. I’ll write more eventually when I get a chance but for now here’s a video. Like his mama, he has no shame. http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/theogeo/6321195952/ I can’t figure out how to embed since I’m on my phone. Argh.

To the boy: Your dad

Still life with bored, meditating man and dying flowers It has been a tense few months of anticipation, little one, but today we found out that your dad passed the bar, bringing him one step closer to his dream of being a slick shyster who works out of the back of his Honda. It’s important to chase your dreams, son, even if your clutch goes out.

Baby shower No. 1

My friend Ashley took the reins months and months ago before the bump had ballooned and told me she wanted to throw me a baby shower — something she’s always wanted to do — so I happily took her up on her offer. Over the course of the intervening months, she has worked so hard on the event. And did a fabulous job. I really can’t thank her enough for making my first baby shower…

Week thirty

Another big milestone. We’re just ten weeks away, give or take, from meeting the little man. This week he’s comparable in size to a head of cabbage. He’s slated to gain half a pound a week here on out, and he’s supposedly losing his adorable fur coat. His movements in there are so interesting. Sometimes they’ll be spastic, like a collection of shudders and shakes. Occasionally I will feel what seems initially like I have…

Peeking in

I am in love with a face that I’ve never even met. I got to see it again, sort of, Tuesday afternoon. Here’s a picture, with a helpful annotated guide in case you can’t tell what’s going on. He’s a champion scowler already. I love it. He comes from solid scowling stock, so that makes perfect sense. We saw him wiggle a little bit, and he lobbed a good punch at the tech’s wand. He…

Week twenty-two

There was a moment during today’s early morning ultrasound (big thanks to the Mid-South Maternal Fetal Medicine for squeezing us in at such a late notice) when I felt the bulk of worry lift off me. I squeezed Ray’s hands as the tech, who was so nice and so thorough, went organ by organ, noting how everything looked great, all of it right on track in size and function. That bright bowel the Flinn Clinic…

The latch

I had a dream about the baby last night. He was big and white and bald, and sitting in someone’s lap next to me, drinking from a bottle. I instantly began worrying that he was drinking formula, and wondering why he wasn’t in my lap, breastfeeding. Where had I been? How had I allowed him to have formula when the plan was to breastfeed exclusively? And so on. So I took him into my lap…

Eleven weeks

I have this iPhone app that alerts me every Thursday morning that I have started a new week of pregnancy. There is no need for the alert, really, as I obsessively read and reread every day’s tidbit, and I know at every moment of every day just what week and day I’m on. This week there is a little lime-sized thing in me. If all is still well, its bones are hardening, its tooth buds…
