Some words about some food

I so rarely get out to restaurants in town that don’t rhyme with “Jo’s Codway Frappe*” that when I do, I feel compelled to take a photo of what I ate and tell the internet. You know, like we ancient bloggers used to do all the time! First up, the new Saint Anejo on “M Street,” which is actually on McGavock, isn’t it? (Everything is on McGavock, somehow.) I had the duck confit enchiladas, which…

‘Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower’

I would never tell the other seasons, but fall is my favorite, favorite, favorite. The way the air wake up your lungs when you breathe it in deep, the way you can layer your clothes and peek out at the world, the way each day changes the landscape around you and you are all too aware of how finite things are. I’d never been to Radnor Lake until a couple of days ago, when the…

‘The motions of people who could find each other in a pitch black room’

That there is Aunt B signing a copy of A City of Ghosts. And this here is Aunt B reading two of her lovely short stories. Even if you’ve never had so much as sympathy for the devil, you might find yourself with a crush on him after the second story. Please read A City of Ghosts if you haven’t yet. I will loan you my copy. (Here’s a review/interview I did for The Commercial…

Nashville shopping

Behold the vast emptiness of the Global Mall

Once upon a time the mall in Antioch was the hip shit. I know because I purchased basically every Christmas present there between 2000 and 2004. At some point after I graduated and moved to Memphis, the mall fell into some hard times and reported gang activity, and it closed down. Which is pretty surprising; it was a bustling area back in the day. The mall is open again, and it’s rebranded as Global Mall…

Nashville people are dumb

The dumbest thing I have ever seen

I work near the Gulch. And because I have the enduring misfortune of working evenings, I get from my parking lot to the interstate by coming up that street that’s on the side of Whiskey Kitchen. There is a valet stand there. I reckon it takes about 20 steps from the valet stand to the door of the restaurant. Thing is, there are places to park EVERYWHERE around Whiskey Kitchen, many of which would not…

Deep thoughts on a playground

Yesterday I was up early with Holden (he hasn’t slept past 7 since I’ve been off) and when he went down for his nap, so did I. The sun was out after lunch so we went to Long Hunter in the early evening for a walk, and found that the lake had flooded most of the walking trail. So Ray sprinted back and forth on the accessible part of the path and Holden and I…

I hate/love nature

Animal life in the wilds of Antioch, Tenn.

This is a groundhog, right? This little guy gets around. I see him in our and the neighbors’ back yards as well as across the street in the horse pasture. He’s the size of a very large cat or a raccoon. You can’t tell scale from this crop but you can see the fence behind him here. He’s always sifting through the dirt and grass when I see him. He has a really interesting pattern…

This is crazy this is crazy this is crazy

That’s what keeps running through my head as I’m going through the business of making this move. I just keep picturing Clark Griswold clapping his hands together and saying it over and over. So here is where we are and where we have been. We found a house! After three weekends of searching plus ALL THE INTERNET RESEARCHING, we ended up deciding to go with a house on a tip supplied by Sarcastro. (Apropos of…

Day 16/365: Chocolaaaaate

Why yes, this blog is now officially a food-photography blog, why do you ask? Just kidding! Although being a food photographer is on my short list of dream jobs. My friend Ashley gave me this bar of Olive & Sinclair salt and pepper chocolate as part of my Christmas gift, and I think it’s so cool that it’s made by a Nashville company. Not to mention their snazzy package design. The chocolate itself? Well, it’s…
